Girlguiding centre closures

Dear friends

Welcome to summer!! Our fair is on Saturday and Ted’s garden party a few weeks later– it’s beginning to feel a lot like summer.

I have watched with growing pride this last couple of weeks, the young people connected with our church. As you may have heard, the “powers that be” in Girlguiding have decided to close their 5 Training and Activity Centres across the country. There has been no consultation with the members, just an executive decision as a cost cutting exercise. The girls are cross – and decided to make their voices heard.

Our Guides, Brownies and Rainbows have been making videos and writing postcards to head office in the fight to keep the centres open as a resource. These centres are valuable in giving girls, who might not be able to access these experiences elsewhere, the chance to run, jump, climb trees, take part in rock climbing, abseiling, zip wires, archery and work together in their groups. There was even a protest in St James’s Park, London, after the trooping of the colour – this was attended by many hundreds of Girlguiding members.

Their actions fill me with pride and hope – these girls decided they would not allow the powerful to take away their voice, or their activity centres. They are raising their voices in protest, like good dissenters, against injustice – and more power to their elbow I say!! It remains to be seen whether they can win and have the decision reversed – but their efforts are commendable. There’s more information and a chance for you to support the campaign on our post about the closures … THUNDERATION.

I trust you will all continue to enjoy these long warm days while they last.

Shalom
Ann
